It depends on the type of hoist – ask to see the manufacturers instructions – and then stick to them – you can’t be sued then!
Make sure you get trained in it’s use too.
I’m not completely sure what your saying, but if your talking about a man lift,or a construction type elevator and you live out here in CA. I’m absolutely sure cal OSHA would like to have a few words with your employer
It is unsafe to both you and the person in the hoist. What if you injured yourself using. I think you need to cover yourself.
When I last did manual handling training, it said that legally you can have one person using a hoist, but best practise is to have two people. In house procedures and policies vary from place to place but individual risk assessments must be in place to cover hoisting each individual. Check out the risk assessment first. You might want to suggest that two people should be in attendance if you feel that it is unsafe for one person to do it alone. Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility, so it is your place to ask questions and make suggestions if you think they are necessary.
2 people is best practice. Don’t do anything you shouldnt do. If it all goes wrong you will be personally liable and that could be disasterous for you. Check with your senior staff, or the manager of the home. You may be being asked to do it alone due to staffing shortages but that is no excuse. Ask for guidance and dont be forced into doing it. You could hurt yourself and certainly hurt the person in the sling. Hope this helps…….
It’s the law that 2 people are required for hoisting someone. I assume you work in a care home? Tell the manager that you won’t hoist anyone at all unless there is someone to help you. Staff are supposed to also have full hoist training before doing that
