dinghy storage – I want to suspend one from a garage ceiling?
Question by dean s: dinghy storage – I want to suspend one from a garage ceiling?
Has anyone got any experience / tips and suggestions on the best way to suspend a mirror dinghy from a garage ceiling. I’m looking to store a mirror in my garage and the obvious place is to hang it from the ceiling (its very stong and will take the weight). I guess I will need some kind of strapping and some king of hoist to get it to the correct position… Someone must have done this already.

Ceiling Lift for People With a Disability
Elderly people are usually tied down by physical disabilities caused by illness and depression. Physical disabilities have a high impact on the daily activities of a person. Physically disabled individuals find it difficult to perform even their basic needs. They have to depend on others to carry out their day to day activities. They cannot do all the work that normal people do. Movements within the house, traveling from one place to another and other similar activities are possible only with the help of others.
Various lifts are available in the market to assist these physically disabled people. Among these, ceiling lifts are the best choice for people with a disability. Ceiling lifts are ideal for transferring and lifting disabled people in limited space. Since these needs only a lesser space to operate than floor lifts, they do not occupy any floor space. A ceiling lift has a wide range of units and accessories for hoisting. A person using a ceiling lift can experience more safety, comfort and mobility. The rail system associated with a ceiling lift can be installed in homes, therapy clinics, hospitals, swimming pools and other locations to help physically disabled people to improve their quality of life.
The various accessories of a ceiling lift include door transitions to move from one room to another. There are switch tracks to lead the rail in various directions and turntables for the rails to cross each other. There are ceiling brackets for perfect mounting.
There are mainly two types of ceiling lifts – portable and permanent ceiling lifts. For a ceiling lift, positioning is much easier than a floor mounted lift. Floor mounted lifts always have problems with carpets and other floor fittings. A portable ceiling lift helps in easy movement between different track locations. It can be easily and safely operated by a caregiver. Its light weight and portability make it ideal to be used in multi-room settings. Motorized ceiling lift helps in independent transfer.
Ceiling lifts are a boon to physically challenged people and help them enjoy life like normal people by overcoming their physical handicap.

Ceiling Lifts: the Smart Solution
In today’s healthcare industry, ceiling lifts have proven to be the smartest solution to lift, transfer and transport patients with limitations. A number of firms are active in this field of manufacturing ceiling lifts in various specifications to suit customers’ needs. The ceiling lift solution was launched in 2002 in British Columbia. It was developed by OHSAH (Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare) for safer handling of patients during movement.
Portable ceiling lifts have a patient sling, motorized pulley system or motorized unit. This device is integrated with a removable battery powered hoist. To support the patients as they are lifted in a reclining position or during gait training or un-weighted walking, the ceiling lifts have a sling or harness. The overhead ceiling lift is attached with a multiple overhead track system to meet lifting needs. The track systems are available in various forms including free standing/semi-permanent; single track – to move single route across multiple or single room; 2-strap – to move across doorways; and X-Y traverse track system – to move along the X and Y axis. Ceiling lifts come with handheld remote controllers to control the lateral or traverse motion of the lift during raising and lowering movement. The free standing track system is an alternative for ceiling installed track system. The easy to hold and carry ceiling lifts are available in various load carrying capacities. Moreover, these are provided with swivel options.
Realize the benefits of having ceiling lift technology, which include:
• An individual with disabilities can be easily and effortlessly moved from one room to another with no strain or risk to the caregiver.
• Furniture, never being in the way, need not be removed to facilitate the movement of the ceiling lift.
• Optimizes space use since it is installed on the ceiling.
• Can be operated independently by the users with enough upper body strength.
• The mobile ceiling lifts are easy to use and easy to install.
Select the apt ceiling lifts – the smart solution from a quality provider, considering the specifications and cost.

Ceiling Mounted Hoists
Mounting the hoist to the ceiling is usually the preferred method of installation when considering the manual handling of a patient or disabled person. A ceiling mounted hoist has several advantages over alternative lifting methods.
A ceiling hoist takes up no floor space
The user can operate independently
Permanently fixed hoist and portable hoists available on ceiling mounted tracks
Does not require 2 carers to operate, as is currently recommended when using mobile floor hoists
The ceiling hoist track can travel from room to room
The portable hoist option is easily detached for use on tracking installed in other rooms
Installing Ceiling Mounted Hoists
Most structures are able to accommodate a ceiling mounted hoist. A variety of solutions are available to assist installation. The following applications are commonplace.
Concrete ceilings
Steel webbed joists
Cathedral/sloping ceilings
Steel and timber I beams
Timber joists
Suspended ceilings
Pitched roofs
Ceiling Hoist Track Configurations
There are several track layouts to choose from which are determined by the lifting requirements in the room.
Straight Tracking
Straight track with 45 or 90 degree bends
Room to room track systems
XY or H frame tracking system
Turntables
Y Junction Exchangers
Wall Mounting
Semi-permanent tracking
Straight tracking is the easiest to install and most cost effective means of hoisting, enabling basic lifting of the user from position to position in a straight line. Adding curved sections to the track permits greater room coverage and increased lifting and repositioning flexibility. For full room coverage the XY system is required. This involves two straight sections of track being fixed adjacent to each other on each side of the room with another track joining the two. The XY hoist track system allows full room coverage and is an increasingly popular choice.
Fixed ceiling hoist features can include:
User programmable features
Emergency stop and lowering
Battery and charging system
Return to charge feature
Wireless remote control available
Power sharing function for turntables, gates and exchangers
How much does a ceiling hoist cost?
The cost of a ceiling mounted hoist is determined by a number of factors.
The length of the tracking
The number and complexity of bends if required
The ceiling construction
The number and type of fixings required
The weight of the hoist user/s
A straight track hoist 3 metres in length and fixed to timber joists, or to a concrete ceiling, would normally cost less than £2000. For a 3 metre x 3 metre XY system the price would normally be between £2500 and £3000.
