Uses of Overhead Cranes

A Crane is a lifting machine, generally equipped with a winder (also called a wire rope drum), wire ropes or chains and sheaves that can be used both to lift and lower materials and to move them horizontally. It uses one or more simple machines to create mechanical advantage and thus move loads beyond the normal capability of a human. Cranes are commonly employed in the transport industry for the loading and unloading of freight, in the construction industry for the movement of materials and in the manufacturing industry for the assembling of heavy equipment.

An Overhead Crane is a type of crane where the hook-and-line mechanism runs along a horizontal beam that runs along two widely separated rails. Often it is in a long factory building and runs along rails along the building’s two long walls. It is similar to a gantry crane. Overhead cranes typically consist of a hoist to lift the items, the bridge, which spans the area covered by the crane, and a trolley to move along the bridge.

The most common Overhead Crane use is in the steel industry. Every step of steel, until it leaves a factory as a finished product, the steel is handled by an overhead crane. Raw materials are poured into a furnace by crane, hot steel is stored for cooling by an overhead crane, the finished coils are lifted and loaded onto trucks and trains by overhead crane, and the fabricator or stamper uses an overhead crane to handle the steel in his factory. The automobile industry uses overhead cranes for handling of raw materials. Smaller workstation cranes handle lighter loads in a work-area, such as CNC mill or saw

Stimulus Grant Allows Scarano Boat Building, Inc to upgrade Overhead Bridge Crane

Woburn, MA-North American Industries (NAI) recently designed and manufactured an overhead crane for Scarano Boat Building, Inc. in Albany, NY. Located in the Port of Albany, Scarano designs and builds custom yachts that range from sailing to power vessels. Scarano is also responsible for restoring great historical vessels to be put on display at museums.

Scarano was recently awarded $376 thousand in federal stimulus money under the Maritime Administration’s Small Shipyards Grant Program. As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (‘ARRA”), the federal government has allocated $98 million for the capital improvement of small shipyards and for worker training in maritime industries.

NAI will install a 10 ton, Class D, single-girder overhead bridge crane with a 63 foot span and a fully fabricated 140 foot runway system in Scarano’s main construction facility. This crane will have a single trolley with a 10 ton hoist and a three ton auxiliary hoist working in simultaneous operation. NAI has also agreed to retrofit an existing three ton single-girder overhead crane. With an original span of 58 feet, NAI has been tasked to relocate the crane and reduce its span by six feet.

NAI is a leading manufacturer of industrial overhead cranes including bridge cranes, gantry cranes, monorails, jib cranes, and custom-engineered systems. With its large, experienced engineering group, technical sales force and over 40 years of manufacturing expertise, the Company is well-positioned to handle the needs of a diverse range of end users. NAI designs, manufactures and installs crane components and crane systems for the military and municipalities as well as large and small operating businesses on a global basis. The Company is a member of the CMAA (Crane Manufacturers Association of America), and its crane systems are frequently featured in HOIST magazine.

ThyssenKrupp Airport Systems Looks to NAI for New Overhead Crane System

Woburn, Massachusetts,– North American Industries (NAI) announces that it has replaced an existing overhead crane for ThyssenKrupp Airport Systems Inc. (ThyssenKrupp) in its Fort Worth, TX manufacturing facility. ThyssenKrupp, part of ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG, designs, manufactures installs and services passenger boarding bridges for airports. Its product line includes glass-sided crystal bridges and smooth painted steel sides.

In 2001, ThyssenKrupp purchased two cranes from NAI for the Fort Worth facility.  NAI has continued to provide service and parts to ThyssenKrupp since that time and was pleased to provide this new crane system in support of ThyssenKrupp’s continued growth.

NAI designed and installed a 20-ton top running double-girder bridge crane with an 87-foot span running the entire length of the building.  The crane will be used to transport ThyssenKrupp’s boarding bridges through its manufacturing process.

Mike Wiens, Plant Manager at ThyssenKrupp states, “The overall thoroughness of North American Industries was impressive. NAI provided prints, initiated regular planning communications and provided timely updates. We were most pleased with the project manager that facilitated the installation. He was very knowledgeable and focused, possessing a genuine concern for limiting any possible downtime we may have due to this process. In addition, the crane was adequately and safely tested upon completion.”

”We are focused on providing highly-engineered overhead lifting systems designed to meet specific operational objectives, and we take pride in providing a seamless experience for our customers.  Any time we receive a repeat order, it validates the good work we do in support of our customers,” commented George Wheelwright, NAI Sales Manager.  Over half of NAI’s business comes from repeat customers.

NAI is a leading manufacturer of industrial overhead crane systems, including bridge cranes, gantry cranes, monorails, jib cranes, and custom-engineered systems. With its large, experienced engineering group, technical sales force and over 40 years of manufacturing expertise, NAI is well-positioned to handle the needs of a diverse range of end users. NAI designs, manufactures and installs crane components and crane systems for the military and municipalities as well as large and small operating businesses on a global basis. The Company is a member of the CMAA (Crane Manufacturers Association of America) and MHIA (Material Handling Industry of America), and its crane systems are frequently featured in Hoist and Overhead Crane & Hoist magazines.
